YouTube is expanding its paid offering with an AI-powered playlist generator for Premium subscribers on iOS and Android. The feature lets users craft playlists using natural language prompts—typed or spoken—covering moods, genres, or even quirky scenarios like 'sad post-rock' or '90s classic hits.' The system analyzes track metadata, genre classifications, and listening patterns to assemble a tailored lineup in moments. This move underscores Google's push to layer generative AI into entertainment to bolster YouTube Premium’s appeal.
The rollout is gradual and limited to select regions, with early access for Premium users. The tool is accessed via the YouTube Music app and builds on a July 2024 test in the US that offered a similar prompt-based radio-style experience, but this latest iteration is more integrated with the main playlist experience.
Industry observers note that rivals like Spotify, Amazon Music, and Deezer have experimented with AI-generated playlists, and YouTube's rollout represents its most direct foray into automated playlist curation to date.
