Veteran actress Shagufta Ali recently offered a candid glimpse into working with Bollywood star Govinda, revealing surprising details about his professional habits and personal beliefs. Known for his energetic performances, Govinda's perfectionism apparently surpasses even that of Aamir Khan, according to Ali.
Ali shared that Govinda would often insist on as many as 25 rehearsals for a single scene. Even when director David Dhawan would approve a take, Govinda would still push for more, driven by his strong "eye for perfection." This meticulousness meant he didn't care if his co-stars were tired; the perfect shot was his priority.
However, Govinda's dedication to perfection came with a significant caveat: his punctuality. Ali recalled that Govinda was consistently late, arriving four to five hours after the scheduled call time. "If the shift were 9 am, he would come by 1 or 2 pm, and never before that," she stated. This habit often irked co-stars like the late Kader Khan, who would visibly grumble about the delays, even if not openly expressing anger. Despite this, Ali maintained that Govinda was a "very nice person" and "fun-loving."
Beyond his on-set behaviour, Ali also spoke about Govinda's spiritual and superstitious nature. She recounted an incident during the filming of "Banarsi Babu" in Coimbatore, where Govinda, travelling to Mumbai for three days, offered Ali his hotel room due to a fan issue in hers. Upon entering, Ali discovered he had set up a beautiful mini-temple in the room. His belief in auspicious timings was so strong that he would only do things at specific, favourable moments. Ali, mindful not to disrespect the sacred space, initially refused to stay but ultimately relented after Govinda's insistence.
These revelations paint a multifaceted picture of the iconic actor, a driven perfectionist with a spiritual bent, whose creative intensity sometimes clashed with the practicalities of film production schedules.
