MI5 Warns MPs Over Chinese Espionage Tactics on LinkedIn and Headhunters

Britain's domestic intelligence agency has issued a fresh espionage alert targeting members of Parliament and parliamentary staff, warning that Chinese state actors are actively seeking to recruit through professional networks. According to the alert, Chinese intelligence operatives are using headhunters and recruitment agents to establish long-term relationships with lawmakers and those who work in close proximity to government processes.

LinkedIn and other social and professional platforms are being used to reach people who can access or influence policy. The aim, security officials say, is to gather information and lay the groundwork for future contacts, not just for a one-off data grab. The targets span Parliament staff, economists, think-tank employees, geopolitical consultants, and others who interact with government work.

Officials warned of overt incentives, including all-expenses-paid trips to China and payments in cash or cryptocurrency, that could smooth the path for covert information sharing.

To counter the threat, MI5 has signaled tightened security powers and stronger enforcement. Rules around covert funding of political parties will be tightened, and the Electoral Commission will gain greater enforcement powers. Security briefings are planned for all parties and candidates standing in elections next May for the Scottish Parliament, Welsh Senedd, and councils across England.

Despite China remaining the UK’s third-biggest trading partner, ministers say sanctions will be used as necessary, and the government will bolster protections for democratic processes. The alert serves as a reminder that espionage threats are an ongoing challenge as the political calendar heats up.
