Delhi Deluge! Heavy Rains Cause Chaos, Waterlog IGI Airport & Streets

Delhi and the wider National Capital Region (NCR) woke up to or were battered by torrential rainfall on Saturday, leading to widespread chaos, significant waterlogging, and considerable disruption to daily life. Roads transformed into rivers, underpasses became submerged, and even the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport struggled with the deluge.

Commuters across the city reported facing immense difficulties, with several areas like Sadar Bazar, Kamla Nagar, ITO, Mahipalpur, Dwarka, Subroto Park, Saket, Hamdard, Patparganj, and Connaught Place experiencing severe waterlogging and traffic snarls. The Palam weather station recorded a staggering 72.2 mm of rainfall in just three hours, between 2:30 PM and 5:30 PM, making it the highest in the city during that period.

Other areas like Lodhi Road (34.6 mm) and Safdarjung (32.6 mm) also received substantial downpours. The impact was particularly acute at IGI Airport, a major hub for both domestic and international travel.

Passengers were seen wading through stagnant water to reach terminals, a sight that quickly went viral on social media.

The heavy rain caused flight delays and diversions, adding to the travel woes. Airport authorities confirmed that approach roads and forecourt areas experienced water accumulation, which was later cleared. Their on-ground teams are working diligently to manage the situation and ensure a smoother passenger experience despite the inclement weather.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert, warning that more rain is expected over the next two days, particularly on Saturday, with light to moderate showers predicted. Sunday might see lighter rainfall. However, there's a silver lining for residents: a dry spell is anticipated from Monday through Thursday, offering a much-needed respite from the wet conditions.

Public Works Department officials have deployed pumps to clear floodwaters, especially from critical underpasses, to restore normalcy as quickly as possible.
