This significant meeting is scheduled towards the end of July, following the conclusion of India’s ongoing tour to England.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the gathering will involve the board's hierarchy and key stakeholders of the team. The primary goal is to map out a clear roadmap for the upcoming ODI World Cup in South Africa and the ambitious defence of the T20 World Cup title in Australia and New Zealand in 2028. Saikia emphasized that this exercise is a “performance review,” not a knee-jerk reaction, despite India’s successive T20I series defeats in Ireland and England.
These recent losses, notably under the new T20I captain Shreyas Iyer (with World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav omitted), have reignited concerns about the team’s ability to adapt to challenging overseas conditions. With both the next ODI and T20 World Cups slated for venues with vastly different playing conditions compared to India's home pitches, the review is expected to heavily focus on building a versatile squad capable of performing across various environments.
Key figures such as Head Coach Gautam Gambhir, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar, T20I Captain Shreyas Iyer, and ODI Captain Shubman Gill are anticipated to be part of these critical discussions. The BCCI aims to foster greater alignment between the selection committee and the team management. Furthermore, the team’s selection policy is also under scrutiny. The contentious decision to replace Sanju Samson with teenage opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi for both the T20I squad and the subsequent Zimbabwe series, despite neither making a significant impact, has drawn considerable criticism.
