Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar’s son, is set to be sworn in as a Bihar minister as JD(U) presses for parity with BJP in the cabinet expansion.
Patna, Bihar — Eight weeks into his political debut, Nishant Kumar, the son of JD(U) patriarch Nitish Kumar, is tipped to enter the Bihar government in CM Samrat Choudhary’s first cabinet expansion. The move aligns with JD(U)’s push for equitable representation alongside the BJP, as the party seeks to strengthen governance and youth leadership in the administration.
Sources say Nishant, who has been on a statewide 'sadbhav yatra' after his father quit as chief minister and moved to the Rajya Sabha on March 8, agreed to take on a ministerial role following a key meeting at Nitish Kumar’s residence. The meeting included Union minister Rajeev Ranjan Singh and JD(U) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha, who reportedly convinced him that joining the ministry would both boost the party’s image and provide him valuable governance experience.
In the upcoming expansion, two new JD(U) faces—Shailesh Kumar and B S Kushwaha—are expected to take oath alongside Nishant. Eight JD(U) ministers from the previous government will also be sworn in, boosting the party’s strength to 11 ministers. The BJP previously had 14 ministers in the earlier NDA government, underscoring the balancing act underway as the two allies recalibrate their share in the cabinet.
