In a significant development in the ongoing crackdown against illegal online betting, Sourabh Chandrakar, the alleged mastermind behind the massive Mahadev betting app, has been detained in Oman. This detention comes after persistent efforts by Indian agencies to bring him to justice for orchestrating a sprawling international gambling syndicate.
Indian authorities are now actively working to secure Chandrakar's extradition or deportation from Oman. This isn't the first time Chandrakar has been apprehended; he was previously detained in Dubai. However, to the frustration of Indian law enforcement, he was later released by authorities there, allowing him to evade capture further.
Chandrakar's current detention in Oman, which occurred in the last week of June, was reportedly based on an Interpol notice issued at the request of Indian agencies. Initial reports suggest he was traveling on a fake passport, believed to have been obtained from a Southeast Asian country, highlighting the elaborate measures taken to evade law enforcement.
The Mahadev betting app, which Chandrakar allegedly co-founded with Ravi Uppal, is accused of facilitating illegal online bets amounting to thousands of crores of rupees. Indian authorities have already taken action, attaching assets worth an astounding ₹1,700 crore linked to Chandrakar, underscoring the scale of the illicit operation.
The pursuit of Chandrakar has been a long one, with Indian agencies seeking his repatriation since 2019. India and Oman share an extradition treaty, giving officials in New Delhi hope that this time, Chandrakar will finally be brought back to face legal proceedings in India. Meanwhile, co-founder Ravi Uppal's whereabouts remain uncertain after he reportedly went missing from the UAE following an earlier attempt at extradition. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Chhattisgarh police are actively investigating the founders of this massive betting empire.
