Kashmir Demolitions: LeT Terrorists' Homes Razed, 2,500 Detained After Cop Killing

Security forces recently took decisive action in South Kashmir, demolishing the residential houses of two alleged Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists. This operation came just a day after a head constable was tragically shot dead in a terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag, sparking widespread outrage and a swift response from authorities. Concurrently, a massive crackdown saw over 2,500 people detained for questioning, signaling an intense effort to dismantle suspected terrorist support networks across the region.

The demolitions, which occurred in Anantnag’s Guri village and Hassanpora Tawella, targeted the homes of LeT terrorists Adil Ahmad Thoker and Haroon Rashid Ganai. Officials confirmed that Ganai had been active with LeT since 2018. Locals alleged that security forces used explosives to raze the structures after asking residents to vacate, an account that raised concerns. Furthermore, residents reported that a mosque and a vehicle also sustained damages during the demolitions, which were accompanied by loud bangs in the localities.

These actions, however, have drawn criticism from political leaders. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah voiced strong disapproval, stating that mass arrests and demolitions “will not restore peace” and are contrary to directions set by the Supreme Court. His remarks underscore a contentious debate about the effectiveness and legality of such measures in counter-terrorism operations.

In the wake of the Anantnag attack, J&K Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha chaired a high-level security review meeting in Srinagar. The meeting, attended by senior officials from the Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police, civil administration, and other security agencies, focused on enhancing coordination and ensuring the safety of pilgrims undertaking the annual Amarnath Yatra. The Lieutenant Governor stressed the importance of seamless cooperation among all departments to address security threats and weather-related challenges for the pilgrimage.

The extensive detentions and house demolitions reflect a firm stance by security forces following the killing of the policeman, aiming to send a strong message to militant groups and their sympathizers. However, the criticism from political quarters highlights the delicate balance between maintaining security and upholding civil liberties in the sensitive region of Kashmir.
