Caffeine Shock! 🤯 Costa Cappuccino Packs 3x More Punch Than Starbucks
Think all cappuccinos are equal? Think again! A new study reveals shocking caffeine differences between Costa, Starbucks, and other high street coffee giants. Find out which brew truly wakes you up!
Coffee lovers, brace yourselves! A new study has revealed that the caffeine content in your favourite high street coffees can vary "wildly," often leading to a much bigger, or smaller, jolt than you might expect. Consumer champion Which? conducted the latest research, analyzing popular drinks from Caffe Nero, Costa Coffee, Greggs, Pret A Manger, and Starbucks.
The findings are quite startling. A medium cappuccino from Costa, for example, contains a massive 325 milligrams (mg) of caffeine. To put that into perspective, that's almost three-and-a-half times the caffeine found in the same drink at Starbucks, which clocks in at just 89mg.
According to Which?, Costa's cappuccino is equivalent to downing around four cans of Red Bull!
Other chains also showed significant caffeine levels.
Greggs and Caffe Nero weren't far behind Costa for their cappuccinos, with 235mg and 221mg respectively.
Costa also led the pack for other drinks, with its espresso shot delivering 100mg of caffeine and its flat white packing 241mg. In contrast, Starbucks' espresso shot has 45mg, and its flat white 89mg. While Costa's caffeine levels for these specific drinks have remained consistent since Which?'s last study in 2023, Caffe Nero's cappuccino caffeine content has nearly doubled.
Starbucks, despite generally having lower caffeine across its menu, has seen slight increases in its espressos, cappuccinos, and filter coffees over the past three years. Even the increasingly popular matcha lattes showed wide variations.
Costa's hot matcha latte contained the highest caffeine at 99mg, followed by Starbucks at 57mg, and Pret at 28mg.
This research highlights the importance for consumers, especially those sensitive to caffeine or advised to monitor their intake, to be aware of these significant differences across their go-to coffee spots.
