Ritu Tawde of the Bharatiya Janata Party has been nominated to become the next mayor of Mumbai, while Shiv Sena’s Sanjay Shankar Ghadi will serve as deputy mayor. Ghadi is the corporator from Magathane, and the pairing marks a deliberate bid to balance leadership across the alliance as it seeks to steer the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The decision comes amid an aggressive push by the coalition to translate its 118-strong bloc into control of the city’s largest municipal body, aided by the alliance’s overall tally of 144 seats required to claim the majority.
The backdrop to the nomination is the recent BMC elections held on January 15, where the BJP won 89 seats and Shiv Sena secured 29, giving the Mahayuti a comfortable edge in the 236-seat house and pushing them past the halfway mark needed to govern. A lottery held on January 22 determined eligibility for the mayoral post, with the result that Mumbai’s next mayor will be a woman from the General category. In a wider pattern, Pune, Dhule, Nanded-Waghala and Navi Mumbai also elected women mayors from the General category, underscoring a broader push for female leadership in Maharashtra’s civic bodies.
Despite the clear majority, the alliance faces ongoing nerves due to last-minute defections and intra-party tensions. A row erupted soon after the elections when the Shinde-led Sena reportedly moved its corporators, signaling that internal dynamics within the coalition could still shape who ultimately controls the BMC’s key posts.
