Starmer revealed that the final decision was made during a weekend at Chequers, the prime minister's countryside residence, with his wife Victoria and their teenage children.
"I grappled with what was the best thing to do for me, for the country, for the government," Sir Keir stated. He explained that these discussions initially involved many colleagues, parliamentary members, his team, advisers, and trade unions. However, for him, the decision ultimately became a deeply personal one.
He emphasized, "And that's why it was a decision taken ultimately when Vic and I were away with the kids. We went to Chequers and just spent two days together as a family. And that's when I came to my final decision." Starmer added that deciding to end one's political career is an "intensely personal matter," at least it was for him, and he wanted to make that decision with his wife, Victoria.
