Ofcom Probes TikTok: Child Safety Concerns & Age Verification Flaws!
UK regulator Ofcom is investigating TikTok over concerns about ineffective age verification, potentially exposing children to harmful content like self-harm and suicide. Will TikTok face huge fines? Get the full story on
The UK's online regulator, Ofcom, has launched a formal investigation into TikTok over serious concerns that the popular social media platform is failing to protect children from harmful content. This probe comes nearly a year after the Online Safety Act introduced measures to safeguard children online, highlighting ongoing issues with age verification.
Ofcom's primary concern revolves around TikTok's method of inferring user ages. The watchdog believes this system may have incorrectly identified a significant number of children, leaving them vulnerable to disturbing content. This includes posts related to self-harm, suicide, disordered eating, and pornography, all categories deemed highly damaging to young users.
While Ofcom has not yet reached a conclusion, the implications for TikTok are substantial. If found non-compliant, the platform could face hefty fines of up to £18 million or 10% of its qualifying worldwide revenue, whichever amount is greater. In the most severe cases, Ofcom also possesses the power to block or restrict access to sites within the UK. TikTok maintains that it requires users to enter their date of birth upon account creation and employs technology using “signals” to verify age indicators.
This investigation unfolds as the UK government prepares to introduce further protective measures, including a potential social media ban for under-16s, set to launch early next year. The growing scrutiny underscores a broader push to create a safer online environment for young people, with regulators intensifying efforts to hold tech giants accountable for the content accessible to minors.
