Trump Says US Will Allow Nvidia H200 Chips to China
Trump announces a plan to permit Nvidia's H200 AI chips to be shipped to China under safeguards, with Commerce Department details pending.
In a post on X, former President Donald Trump said the United States will allow Nvidia to ship its H200 AI chips to approved customers in China and other countries, under conditions designed to preserve strong national security. He added that the U.S. Commerce Department is finalising the details, and that the same approach will apply to AMD, Intel, and other U.S. chipmakers. Trump said he informed Chinese President Xi Jinping of the decision, and that Xi responded positively. He also claimed that 25 percent of proceeds would be paid to the United States, though the White House did not immediately respond to questions about what he intended.
The H200 chip, unveiled two years ago, features more high-bandwidth memory than its predecessor, enabling data processing at higher speeds. A report from the Institute for Progress noted that the H200 would be almost six times as powerful as the H20, the most advanced AI semiconductor that can legally be exported to China after this year’s reversal of export controls. The report also suggested that exporting the chip would allow Chinese AI labs to build AI supercomputers with performance similar to top U.S. AI systems, albeit at higher costs.
Trump added that Nvidia’s latest Blackwell chips would not be allowed to be exported to China, emphasizing that Nvidia’s U.S. customers are already moving forward with Blackwell chips, and that those products are not part of this deal. The White House did not immediately respond to inquiries about the specifics of the policy and what safeguards would be put in place.
