This move, announced by Houthi military spokesman Yahya Sarea, comes as a direct response to what the group describes as an "unjust and oppressive siege" imposed by Saudi Arabia on Yemeni ports and airports for nearly 12 years.
The Houthis' announcement follows a recent uptick in hostilities, including Houthi missile launches targeting Abha airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia. The Houthis stated these attacks were in retaliation for airstrikes on Sanaa's airport, which they attribute to the Saudi-led coalition. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government, however, claimed its strikes on Sanaa aimed to prevent an unauthorized Iranian plane from landing in the capital.
The Red Sea, a vital conduit for global shipping, particularly for oil shipments from Saudi Arabia, is now at the heart of this new escalation. Houthi officials, including deputy head of the Houthi media office Nasruddin Amer, have indicated that the group intends to close the Bab al-Mandab strait to Saudi enemy ships. Yemen has been embroiled in a brutal civil war since 2014, when the Houthis ousted the internationally recognized government from Sanaa. The conflict intensified in 2015 with the intervention of a Saudi-led coalition of Arab states, aiming to restore the government's rule.
