FEMA Nominee Pledges "Objective" Disaster Aid Amid Past Controversies

Cameron Hamilton, President Donald Trump's nominee to lead the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has assured senators he will take an "objective," "fair and reasonable" approach to evaluating requests for disaster aid. This pledge comes as he seeks to take the helm of an agency that has previously faced threats of dismantling from the Trump administration.

During his appearance before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, Hamilton was among several nominees under assessment. Addressing Michigan Senator Gary Peters, the committee's top Democrat, Hamilton emphasized his focus would be to ensure FEMA operates objectively, fairly, reasonably, and consistent with the law in its review of disaster declarations. Peters had voiced concerns about potential partisanship influencing major disaster declarations.

Hamilton's nomination is notable given his past with FEMA. He held a brief temporary leadership role early last year but was removed after publicly defending the agency's existence. In May 2025, during a House hearing, he stated he did not "believe it is in the best interest of the American people to eliminate" FEMA, and was reportedly fired the following day.

His current nomination suggests a shift, as the Republican administration has increasingly signaled it is backing away from earlier promises to dismantle the agency, which had been criticized by the president. If confirmed, Hamilton would become FEMA’s first permanent administrator in Trump’s second term. He faces the significant challenge of leading FEMA through what is anticipated to be a busy summer disaster season, all while navigating the expectations of Trump, who has pushed for major changes following recommendations from an appointed council. Hamilton also acknowledged that staff cuts would be a "challenge" and pledged to expedite funds to states.
