King Charles Makes History: First Monarch to Publicly Release Tax Payments!
King Charles breaks royal tradition, becoming the first monarch to publicly disclose his tax payments! Discover how his £12.9M payment for 2024-25 places him among the UK's top taxpayers.
King Charles III has made an unprecedented move, becoming the first British monarch to publicly disclose his personal tax payments. This historic decision aims to bring greater clarity and accessibility to the opaque world of royal finances, placing the King among the top 100 taxpayers in the United Kingdom for 2024-25.
The King's tax payable for the financial year 2024-25 was a substantial £12.9 million. This follows a payment of £11.7 million for 2023-24. Since his accession to the throne in September 2022, King Charles has voluntarily paid over £30 million in combined income and capital gains tax. This voluntary payment is in line with arrangements initially agreed upon by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1993, covering private income, capital gains, and inheritance tax on relevant assets.
Not just the King, but also his son, Prince William, the Prince of Wales, has followed suit, releasing his financial data as part of broader royal reports. Prince William has contributed over £20 million in tax since inheriting the Duchy of Cornwall, a private estate that provides income for the heir to the throne. This move by both the King and the Prince of Wales signals a new era of transparency for the British monarchy.
James Chalmers, the Keeper of the Privy Purse, emphasized the voluntary nature of these disclosures. He noted that the King, even as Prince of Wales, had previously disclosed his tax information and has now requested that his combined income and capital gains tax payments as King be made public. This commitment to openness is a significant step towards modernizing the monarchy's financial dealings in the public eye. The King's private income sources typically include earnings from investments, trading profits, and funds generated by his private estates like Balmoral and Sandringham, as well as private savings. The figures for 2025-26 are yet to be finalized, awaiting audit and review.
