Delhi Police bust Pakistan-backed terror module led by Shahzad Bhatti

The Special Cell of Delhi Police has busted a Pakistan-backed terror module led by gangster Shahzad Bhatti, with the arrest of three men. Bhatti is said to have coordinated operations from across the border using encrypted platforms and social media, officials said. Police recovered a semi-automatic pistol, 10 live cartridges, and mobile phones containing incriminating chats and reconnaissance videos. The breakthrough came as investigators tracked Bhatti’s online activities and his remote control over the group.

The module was linked to a grenade attack outside a police station in Punjab’s Gurdaspur on November 25, carried out on Bhatti’s instructions. Local police initially attributed the blast to a tyre burst, but Delhi Police clarified Bhatti’s role in directing the operation from abroad.

Shahzad Bhatti is known for his savvy use of social media. Reports note past links with Indian gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who reportedly exchanged Eid greetings with Bhatti in a viral video before their relationship reportedly soured. Earlier this month, Bhatti claimed responsibility for other incidents, including a show of support for rival factions. In the Gurdaspur case, the three youths arrested are Vikas Prajapati alias Betu, 19, of Datia in Madhya Pradesh; Hargunpreet Singh alias Gurkaranpreet Singh, 19, from Ferozepur in Punjab; and Asif alias Arish, 22, from Bijnaur in Uttar Pradesh.

Police say the operation was international and interstate, with Bhatti using Pakistan-based networks to coordinate foot soldiers for public-place attacks. The seizure highlights the growing challenge of cyber-enabled gangs that leverage social media to recruit and direct activities across borders, and the need for continued vigilance by security agencies.
