Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) working president Supriya Sule has announced that her party would only consider supporting the proposed Delimitation Bill if the Centre guarantees a 50% increase in the number of seats for all states in equal proportion. She also demanded that the legislation clearly outline the formula for redrawing parliamentary constituencies.
Addressing the media at the YB Chavan Centre in Mumbai, Sule stated, "The new Delimitation Bill has not yet been introduced. If it includes a provision ensuring a 50% increase in seats for all states, we will discuss it within the INDIA bloc. If it serves the interests of the people, we will consider supporting it." Her remarks come amid widespread speculation that the Narendra Modi-led NDA government might introduce the Delimitation Bill during the upcoming monsoon session of Parliament, scheduled to commence on July 20.
Sule highlighted that the NCP (SP) had previously conveyed its reservations regarding the proposed legislation during a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. She noted that the Centre had assured Opposition parties that their concerns, particularly concerning a 50% cap on the increase in seats, would be addressed. However, these assurances were not reflected in the earlier version of the bill, which subsequently led to its defeat.
Drawing a parallel, Sule mentioned, "We all have unanimously approved the Women's Reservation Bill in the past. As far as the Delimitation Bill is concerned, it must clearly state that the number of seats in all states will increase by 50% in equal proportion. There should also be a 50% cap so that no state faces injustice." She emphasized the need for the bill to clearly define the methodology for delimitation in every constituency, referencing issues faced by Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi's Lok Sabha constituency in Assam during a previous delimitation exercise. The party's support is thus firmly conditional on these crucial provisions being included.
