The Delhi High Court recently delivered a significant ruling, rejecting the bail pleas of activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the alleged larger conspiracy behind the February 2020 North-East Delhi riots. A bench comprising Justice Prathiba M. Singh and Justice Dinesh Bhatt dismissed their third bail applications in the high-profile case on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.
The court's decision was influenced by a previous Supreme Court order from January 5, which stipulated that Mr. Khalid and Mr. Imam could seek bail either upon the completion of protected witness examinations or after one year from the date of the order, whichever came earlier.
The High Court stated that it could not alter these existing directives.
Both activists are accused under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), with allegations pointing to them as among the "masterminds" orchestrating the conspiracy that led to the devastating riots. These events resulted in the tragic loss of 53 lives and left over 700 people injured.
The case, thoroughly investigated by the Delhi Police Special Cell, involves several other individuals, including activist Khalid Saifi and former Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor Tahir Hussain, all implicated in the alleged conspiracy. The latest bail applications were filed after a trial court had already denied their requests for the third time on July 4. Mr.
Imam was initially arrested on August 25, 2020, followed by Mr.
Khalid's arrest on September 13, 2020. The Delhi Police have consistently opposed their bail, reiterating their stance that both individuals played a central role as "masterminds" behind the violence.
