India's IT sector is experiencing a significant shift, with Artificial Intelligence (AI) hiring outpacing overall recruitment. A recent report highlights a stark contrast: AI hiring surged by 16% year-on-year in June, while overall IT job opportunities declined by 3%.
This divergence underscores a critical trend in the technology landscape. Experts note that AI is rapidly becoming a core capability for businesses, driving demand for more senior and specialized talent. Hitesh Oberoi, CEO at Info Edge, which owns job portal Naukri, emphasized this, stating, "The divergence...shows where tech companies are still investing. AI is increasingly becoming a core capability area, especially as demand shifts towards more senior and specialised talent."
Even major players like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India's largest software exporter, are adapting their strategies. TCS announced plans to slow down traditional hiring, aiming instead for an equal number of human employees and AI agents in its workforce. This strategic pivot follows a period where the company cut over 12,000 jobs last July, leading to a net reduction of more than 23,000 employees in the fiscal year ending March 2026.
The demand for AI and Machine Learning (ML) professionals isn't confined to the tech industry alone. The report indicates a 25% increase in AI and ML jobs across 14 diverse sectors. Notably, the insurance and consumer goods sectors showed the most significant growth in job hiring during this period, signaling a broader integration of AI technologies across various industries.
