OpenAI acquires TBPN, marking its first move into media
OpenAI expands into media with the TBPN acquisition, pledging editorial independence and aiming to scale the tech-focused talk show.
OpenAI is taking its first foray into the media industry by acquiring TBPN (Technology Business Programming Network), a daily tech talk show known for candid conversations with leaders across tech, business, and culture. OpenAI says TBPN will operate as its own brand and be supervised by its strategy unit under chief political operator Chris Lehane.
In a company blog post, Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s head of applications, said the acquisition will bring "a team with strong editorial instincts, deep audience understanding, and a proven ability to convene influential voices across tech, business, and culture."
TBPN airs a three-hour live show each weekday, streaming on YouTube and X, and has hosted figures such as Mark Zuckerberg, Satya Nadella, and Sam Altman to speak more freely than in traditional media. The program has been a space where tech leaders can discuss news with fewer constraints than traditional outlets.
Sam Altman publicly welcomed the acquisition on social media, noting that the show would continue its schedule and go live at 11 a.m. Pacific every weekday. OpenAI has not disclosed the deal terms but emphasized that TBPN will remain its own brand while receiving support to scale.
Observers describe the move as a bold expansion of OpenAI’s footprint beyond AI research and product development, signaling an interest in shaping tech discourse and media influence through a content platform anchored by TBPN’s established format. This aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy of diversifying its portfolio and engaging audiences directly through media channels.
Overall, the TBPN acquisition marks a significant milestone for OpenAI as it stitches together a pathway from advanced AI work into public dialogue, while promising to uphold the show’s editorial independence and reputation for candid conversations among tech leaders.
