Sky Acquires ITV's TV & Streaming Arm in £1.6 Billion Deal!
🚨 Major shake-up in UK TV! Sky is set to acquire ITV's media & entertainment division for £1.6bn, aiming to challenge global streamers. What does this mean for your favorite shows and the future of British broadcasting?
In a monumental move set to redefine the British television landscape, Sky has agreed to acquire ITV’s media and entertainment division for a staggering sum potentially reaching £1.6 billion. This landmark deal, following months of intense negotiations, aims to forge a formidable competitor against the dominant global streaming platforms currently vying for viewer attention.
The agreement sees ITV offloading its terrestrial TV channels, including ITV1, ITV2, ITV4, ITV Quiz, and its streaming service ITVX, to Sky. In return, ITV will receive £1.2 billion in cash upfront, gain full ownership of Sky’s 'Love Productions', the creators behind the hugely popular 'Great British Bake Off', valued at £200 million, and potentially an additional £200 million based on its advertising performance post-deal.
Despite the significant ownership change, both companies have assured the public that there will be no immediate alterations to popular TV programmes. Furthermore, ITV’s long-standing dedication to public service broadcasting is expected to remain unaffected. Crucially, productions from ITV Studios, such as 'Love Island', 'I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!', 'Coronation Street', and 'Emmerdale', will continue to be shown on ITV through a comprehensive supply agreement.
This strategic acquisition will place the new combined entity under the umbrella of NBCUniversal, which is part of the US media giant Comcast. Comcast, which already owns Sky, recently announced plans to split into two companies: an independent Comcast business focused on telecoms, and a spin-off media operation. Sky and now the acquired ITV media assets will form a key part of this new NBCUniversal media group. The deal also includes Sky becoming an indirect 20 per cent shareholder in the ITN business.
The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is anticipated to be finalized during the second half of 2027. This lengthy timeline underscores the complexity and significant market implications of bringing together two of the UK’s most prominent broadcasters. Industry observers will be keenly watching how this consolidation impacts consumer choice, content innovation, and the broader competitive dynamics within the rapidly evolving streaming and broadcast sectors.
