Suspected Ebola Case in Bengaluru Triggers Health Alert: What You Need to Know
A 28-year-old traveler from Uganda is under isolation in Bengaluru after showing suspected Ebola symptoms. Health authorities are on high alert as tests are awaited.
A health alert has been sounded in Bengaluru following a suspected case of Ebola involving a traveler from Uganda. A 28-year-old woman, who arrived in the city after traveling through Ahmedabad, was moved to the State-run Epidemic Diseases Hospital on Tuesday after developing mild symptoms.
Health officials confirmed that while the woman did not show symptoms during her initial airport screening, she remained under close monitoring due to her travel history from an Ebola-affected region. Approximately 24 hours after her arrival, she reported experiencing a mild body ache. Following standard safety protocols, health officials immediately collected samples and sent them to the National Institute of Virology in Pune for testing.
Currently, the woman is in stable condition and has not developed any further symptoms. Health officials expect the test results within the next day or two. Even if the first test returns a negative result, a repeat test will be conducted after 48 hours of observation to confirm her status. She will only be discharged after testing negative twice.
In response to the alert, the Karnataka Health Department has designated specialized facilities for isolation and treatment. In Bengaluru, the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases has been named an isolation center, while the Epidemic Diseases Hospital serves as the quarantine facility. Precautionary measures have also extended to other regions; screening protocols are now active at airports in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada to track passengers with recent travel history to Africa, and a 30-bed isolation ward has been prepared in Visakhapatnam as a safeguard.
To further manage the situation, the DGCA has issued a standard operating procedure for airlines. Meanwhile, similar health preparedness measures have been set up in Mangaluru at Wenlock District Hospital and Srinivas Port Hospital to ensure the state is ready for any potential outbreak.
