Ceasefire Sparks Bargain Hunt in Beaten-Down Stocks
US-Iran ceasefire nudges cautious buyers into beaten-down stocks, lifting aviation, travel and oil stocks as investors weigh how sustainable the rally can be.
Mumbai woke to a calmer mood as the US-Iran ceasefire took hold, sparking a cautious bargain-hunt in stocks that bore the brunt of the West Asia sell-off. Sectors like aviation, travel and oil marketing company stocks saw a sharp rebound, even as analysts warn the rally may be temporary. While some investors chase value, others worry about how sustainable the improvement will be once crude stays elevated.
The view from fund managers stays mixed. 'Getting into beaten names in the hope that they will rebound the most is not the right way of investing in this upturn,' said Dinshaw Irani, MD & CEO, Helios India. The easing of geopolitical tensions has improved sentiment at the margin. 'The current ceasefire represents a meaningful positive for investor sentiment, easing one of the key near term geopolitical overhangs that had been suppressing risk appetite,' said Rajesh Iyer, Managing Director – Global Investment Solutions & Asset Management at LGT Wealth India.
On the stock floor, energy and related sectors drew renewed interest. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited rose about 10%, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited at around 7.6%, Indian Oil Corporation roughly 7%, and GAIL about 5.4%. In chemicals, UPL gained around 6% and Navin Fluorine International added 4.2%, as investors rotated into holdings that could rebound first in a stabilizing environment.
Two weeks ceasefire has given markets a breather, but the bigger question remains: will higher crude and energy-supply constraints weigh on the recovery or create selective re-rating opportunities for quality large-cap names in banking, pharmaceuticals and FMCG that were slightly insulated from the conflict? Analysts caution that while sentiment is improving, macro uncertainties persist and any fresh flare-ups could temper gains.
