Delhi tightens security in Uttam Nagar for Eid after court order
Security around Uttam Nagar East metro station and nearby mosques is tightened after a Delhi High Court order to ensure a peaceful Eid, with police planning foot patrols and vehicle checks.
Security around Uttam Nagar East metro station has been tightened as authorities prepare for Eid, with a senior police officer saying “detailed deployment plans” have been drawn up and personnel are prepared to respond swiftly to any situation. Police say that area domination exercises like foot patrols and vehicle checks are being carried out regularly, including in and around Hastsal village.
Joint commissioner of police (western range) Jatin Narwal said the focus is on mosques, Eidgahs and religious establishments visited by Muslims during Eid. Police and armed paramilitary forces will remain deployed in sufficient numbers for law and order duty, with our prime focus on ensuring peace during the celebrations.
The Delhi High Court directed the police and civil administration in Uttam Nagar to take all necessary measures to maintain peace and ensure a secure environment during Eid. “Eid is celebrated to rejoice. It is the duty of all concerned to ensure that on such a pious occasion, public life is not disrupted by any kind of untoward incident involving any sort of vandalism or hooliganism on the part of a single individual or any other section of society,” a bench led by chief justice DK Upadhyaya said. The bench also urged officers not to be lax and noted that whatever happens in Delhi has a ripple effect, keeping arrangements in place till Ram Navami.
Tensions earlier escalated after a violent incident in JJ Colony on March 4 involving a youth reportedly beaten to death. The petition by the Association for Protection of Civil Rights urged increased security at an Eidgah in the slum colony and around other mosques in the area, and the bench’s remarks underscored the need for vigilance as Eid approaches.
Authorities stress that the security network will remain visible and responsive, with residents urged to cooperate and report any concerns to help ensure a peaceful festival for all communities.
