Amazon Unveils Alexa+ in India: Gen AI Meets Local Languages!

Amazon has officially launched its new generative AI-powered personal assistant, Alexa+, in India. This advanced version promises a significant leap in understanding context and natural conversation, with support for English, Hindi, and Hinglish right from the start. More Indian languages are expected to follow soon, making Alexa+ truly local.

Currently, Alexa+ is available for free under an early access program. Users can experience its capabilities across eligible Echo smart speakers, smart displays, Fire TV streaming devices, and the Alexa mobile app.

Browser access is also slated for release in the near future.

Amazon emphasizes that this new conversational assistant is specifically designed to better comprehend the unique Indian style of speaking.

A significant portion of the development for Alexa+ took place in India. Teams of scientists, linguists, and engineers across Bangalore, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai were instrumental in developing its core technology. This includes speech recognition fine-tuned for the acoustics of real Indian homes and language models capable of handling code-mixed Hinglish and culturally nuanced requests.

The assistant is built on Amazon Bedrock, leveraging a new architecture that connects over 70 large language models, including Amazon-made models and those from Anthropic, to hundreds of services and devices.

Alexa+ aims to be a more personalized assistant by learning customer preferences, understanding family routines, and adapting to individual households. With features like Voice ID and Visual ID, it can recognize family members and offer tailored responses, making interactions more seamless and relevant. Additionally, it integrates with Amazon Now, allowing users to place orders using just their voice.

Amazon has also highlighted its commitment to customer privacy and security with Alexa+. A dedicated Privacy dashboard allows customers to review and manage their interactions, listen to recordings, review shared attachments, and set voice recording retention preferences, ensuring transparency and control.

Looking ahead, once the early access period concludes, Alexa+ will remain free for Prime members.

However, for Prime Lite, Prime Shopping Edition plan members, and all non-Prime customers, access will not auto-renew. Instead, it will be available either as a standalone subscription costing ₹2,000 per month or through a Prime plan.

Amazon has also released new Echo devices, including the Echo Show 8, Echo Show 11, Echo Dot Max, and Echo Studio, which are purpose-built to take full advantage of Alexa+'s capabilities.
