Kalyan student’s death prompts probe into alleged train assault over language

A 19-year-old college student from Kalyan, Arnav Khaire, died by suicide after reportedly experiencing severe distress following an alleged assault on a crowded local train. The incident is said to have occurred on November 18 as he was commuting to college in Mulund, with the family later alleging that four to five men attacked him over his use of Hindi instead of Marathi. The tragedy has prompted a police investigation, with officials reviewing CCTV footage to identify those involved and determine the sequence of events on the train.

Kolsewadi police have filed an accidental death report and are coordinating with the Kalyan railway police as they examine all angles. Investigators are not ruling out any factor and say they will rely on complete evidence before drawing conclusions about what caused the fatal distress.

According to the victim’s father, Jitendra Khaire, the confrontation began after a language exchange during the crowded commute. He asserts that the assailants taunted his son with Marathi-language remarks and grew more aggressive, ultimately assaulting him in the train. The family maintains that the beating contributed to the severity of his mental state in the days that followed.

Police officials caution that the investigation is ongoing and that it is premature to attribute the death to a single cause. They are also working to verify whether the assault occurred as described and whether CCTV footage captured the events. The case has drawn attention to safety on public transport and the persistence of language-based harassment, with authorities stressing the need for a transparent, evidence-based inquiry.

As the inquiry progresses, local student groups and commuters are calling for stronger protections against harassment on trains and clearer accountability for those responsible if the allegations are proven true.
