Chhattisgarh Forms High-Level Panel for Uniform Civil Code Implementation

The BJP government in Chhattisgarh has officially established a five-member committee, headed by a retired Supreme Court judge, to prepare a draft for the implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. This significant move was announced by Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai's office via a notification shared on social media, detailing the state government's commitment to creating a framework for UCC and its subsequent implementation.

Retired Supreme Court Judge Ranjana Prakash Desai will chair the newly formed committee. Notably, Justice Desai also leads a similar UCC committee in the neighboring BJP-ruled state of Madhya Pradesh. The panel's other distinguished members include retired IAS officers Shatrughan Singh and MK Raut, senior advocate Mohan Pawar, and former principal Jyoti Rani Singh.

The committee has been given a broad mandate: to thoroughly study the existing legal framework pertaining to UCC implementation in Chhattisgarh. Its key responsibilities involve making recommendations on crucial matters such as marriage, divorce, maintenance, inheritance, and adoption. Furthermore, the panel is tasked with actively seeking suggestions from various stakeholders, including citizens, social organizations, and legal experts, and will also examine UCC-related arrangements in other states to inform its approach.

This high-level committee is expected to prepare a comprehensive draft of the proposed UCC and submit it to the state government, accompanied by necessary legislative and administrative recommendations. The decision to constitute such a committee was initially taken by the Chhattisgarh cabinet on April 15. The government's stated aim behind this initiative is to simplify existing laws and actively promote religious and gender equality across the state, addressing the complexities arising from multiple personal laws currently in effect.
