From red dawn to blue wave: UDF lands a shock win in Kochi

Counting day in Kochi Corporation unfolded as an emotional rollercoaster for supporters. The UDF moved from the sense of doom to mounting momentum within hours, turning what looked like a cliffhanger into a path to a simple majority. The early hours saw the LDF taking the lead in several divisions, with BJP tallying a few wins as well. The first official result, Antony Kureethara of the UDF losing to BJP's Padmakumari in Island North, set a cautionary tone. Still, there were bright spots for the UDF: Deepthy Mary Varghese in Stadium and VK Minimol in Palarivattom led their divisions for much of the tally.

As postal ballots were counted, the State Election Commission portal flickered with shifting numbers. By 8:45 a.m., the LDF led in 12 divisions, the UDF in four, and the BJP in two. By 9:12 a.m., the balance tilted further, with the LDF ahead in 24 divisions to the UDF's nine, though margins remained tight. Then the UDF's backers saw a revival as postal ballots finished and the counting of electronic votes began, giving the opposition a renewed push toward the majority.

By late morning, the UDF appeared to be on a trajectory to coast past the simple majority mark in Kochi, signaling a notable shift in Kerala's urban politics and setting the stage for the council's future agenda. Residents watched as campaigns, concerns about urban issues, and local development promises mingled with the mood on the streets.

As the counting continued in other divisions, supporters began reflecting on how this result could influence future municipal contests in the state. The day underscored the volatility and engagement that characterize Kerala's local elections, where urban centers like Kochi can reshape the broader political map.
