Police probe into online leak of Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan; producers seek forensic action while anti-piracy partner logs torrent activity amid tightened penalties.
A high-definition leak of Vijay-starrer Jana Nayagan has set off a police probe in Tamil Nadu as producers scramble to contain the fallout before the film’s release. The investigation follows a complaint by R. Udayakumar, production controller of KVN Productions, seeking immediate intervention against illegal downloading, transmission, and circulation of the film, which is yet to hit theatres.
Meanwhile, the production house has also faced public blame from the TVK party, which has alleged rivals are behind the online leak. The party named Union minister L Murugan and Tamil Nadu’s deputy chief minister Udhayanidhi Stalin in its statements, urging forensic investigation and legal action against those responsible for unauthorized circulation.
An anti-piracy partner working with the filmmakers has been actively attempting to stem distribution while preserving torrent traffic logs. The firm, based in Erode, is cooperating with the producers to trace the original culprit, as authorities warn that 2023 amendments to the Cinematograph Act could bring imprisonment of up to three years and damages up to 5% of a film’s audited production cost for those involved in piracy.
The leak presents a major setback for KVN Productions, which has spent hundreds of crores on producing and marketing Jana Nayagan. As the investigation unfolds, industry watchers say the case could shape future enforcement against online piracy and influence how unreleased films are protected in the digital age.
