Goa tightens crackdown on illegal nightclubs ahead of Christmas rush

Goa is stepping up a crackdown on illegal nightclubs ahead of the Christmas and New Year season after a deadly nightclub fire claimed 25 lives. A coordinated drive by district administration, fire and emergency services and police is inspecting venues across the North Goa tourism belt, with powers to seal any establishment flouting norms. The ongoing operation follows the December 6 blaze at Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub in Arpora, a tragedy that has spurred officials to push for immediate action.

So far, two prominent nightclubs in Vagator have been sealed — Goya Club and Cafe CO2 Goa. Officials said Goya Club was found to be built on agricultural land, while Cafe CO2 Goa reportedly lacked a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Fire and Emergency Services Department and showed concerns about structural stability. In another move, the Fire and Emergency Services Department ordered revocation of the NOC granted to Diaz Pool Club and Bar at Anjuna in North Goa.

A surprise inspection conducted on December 13 added to the momentum of the drive, underscoring the government’s resolve to ensure all venues operate within licensing norms and safety standards. Kabir Shirgaonkar, the government officer heading the inspection team, explained that the operation targets licensing, permissions and adherence to safety norms, and teams have the authority to seal violations immediately.

As Goa gears up for its busiest fortnight, authorities say the crackdown is essential to prevent a repeat of the tragedy that sparked the current push. Officials stressed that safety checks, proper land use, and verified fire clearances are non-negotiable for clubs hoping to welcome holiday crowds.
