Leadership chatter is swirling in Karnataka as a key Congress MLA publicly asserts that Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar will be the next chief minister, possibly as soon as January 6. Ramanagara MLA H A Iqbal Hussain told reporters there is a 99 percent chance Shivakumar will take over, adding that the date could be January 6 or 9 and calling it a seemingly random choice. He has been openly backing Shivakumar, making his stance clear ahead of any formal announcements.
In contrast, another voice within the party, Union Minister of State for Railways and BJP MP V Somanna, signaled support for Home Minister G Parameshwara as CM, noting that securing power is often a matter of luck and that conduct could matter more than luck. The comments underscore the ongoing leadership contest within the Karnataka Congress as the party weighs its options after the election victory.
The larger party machinery is also aligning behind conversations in Delhi. Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar were slated to meet Congress Parliamentary Party chairperson Sonia Gandhi in Delhi around December 14, following the party’s mega rally at Ramlila Maidan. The talks are viewed as part of broader maneuvers to find a consensus candidate and to navigate differences within the state unit ahead of future electoral considerations.
