The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has finally announced the results for the Class 10 second board examinations on Saturday evening, bringing an end to a two-month-long agonizing wait for students and parents across the nation. The exams, conducted between May 15 and May 21, saw a total of 6,63,777 candidates appear. Significantly, among the 5,13,955 students who opted for improvement, a commendable 59.95% managed to boost their scores. Additionally, 52.40% of the 1,49,822 students who took the compartment exam successfully passed.
However, this positive outcome comes with a significant drawback: the prolonged delay in result declaration. Students and their families have voiced their distress, citing mental agony caused by the uncertainty. This delay had a tangible impact, especially for those hoping to secure preferred streams in Class 11, like science with mathematics.
A poignant example is Lingeshwaran, now a Class 11 student, who missed over a month of school. His mother, Sumathi, explained that he was initially denied his preferred science stream due to his original scores. Holding onto the hope of improved results from the second exam, they waited, causing him to miss crucial early weeks of his new academic year. Though he has now settled for the stream offered by his school, his experience highlights a common predicament.
Across Tamil Nadu, many students found themselves in a similar bind. With schools reopening in early June, most stream allocations were finalized before the second board exam results were out. The delay meant that even if scores improved, there was no guarantee of securing a seat in their desired stream, leading to lost education time. A principal from a private school in Chennai critically noted, "This entire exercise by the CBSE has only been a waste of time and resources as teachers were taken away from schools for evaluation."
This second board examination system is part of an initiative under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to introduce two Board Examinations for Class X from 2026. While the intent is to offer students better opportunities, the current rollout has clearly exposed significant logistical and emotional challenges that need addressing for its future success.
