NATO Jets Down Mystery Drone in Lithuanian Airspace! 🚨

NATO fighter jets have successfully intercepted and shot down an unidentified drone that violated Lithuanian airspace early Tuesday morning. The incident, confirmed by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda, occurred near Kaunas, the country's second-largest city, with authorities suggesting the drone likely originated from neighboring Belarus. The origins of the drone remain unknown, prompting an ongoing investigation.

However, the swift response from Lithuanian armed forces and Italian pilots participating in the NATO Air Defence Mission has been lauded by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence. Drone alerts had previously sounded across the capital Vilnius and its surrounding region earlier in the day, highlighting the heightened state of alert.

President Nausėda emphasized the critical importance of such readiness, stating on social media,

With Russia intensifying its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is vital for our region. Together with our NATO Allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace.

Moscow has not yet commented on the incident.

This event follows a similar drone sighting on Sunday, where an object believed to have entered from Belarus reportedly crossed Lithuanian territory into Russian airspace, though without triggering air threat alerts. Military drone incursions have become increasingly common across Europe since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, raising concerns about regional stability and airspace security.

Lithuania, along with Estonia and Latvia, joined NATO in 2004, benefiting from the Article 5 provision which considers an attack on one member an attack on all.
