Karnataka HC Clears Bike Taxis in Bengaluru, Riders Cheer
Karnataka High Court allows bike taxis to operate in Bengaluru, directing registration as transport vehicles and permits, as riders and aggregators hail a boost to last-mile mobility.
The Karnataka High Court, in its January 23 order, allowed bike taxis to operate in the state by directing authorities to register bikes as transport vehicles and issue contract carriage permits under the Motor Vehicles Act. The decision sets a clear path for aggregators and drivers to operate within a formal regulatory framework while the government works on implementing the court’s directions.
Commuters and riders welcomed the move. One regular rider, Manoj Kumar, said the ruling could help Bengaluru tackle its notorious congestion and provide a reliable last-mile option. Major aggregators followed with positive responses, noting the decision advances safe, affordable mobility and livelihoods for thousands of drivers.
Uber and Rapido spokespeople praised the ruling as a milestone for urban mobility, stressing their readiness to comply with rules and collaborate with the government to speed up licensing and registration. Ola also indicated that the decision would enable scaling up last-mile connectivity while maintaining safety and regulatory standards.
Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said he would first study the judgment before responding, signaling continued government oversight while implementing the court’s framework. The bench granted liberty to impose additional licensing conditions under existing rules. If implemented effectively, the move could boost Bengaluru’s urban mobility and serve as a model for other cities seeking similar reforms.
