A bus collided head-on with a car in Amethi on Sunday amid dense fog, police said, in a crash that killed two people and left ten seriously or moderately injured. The accident occurred near Babu Ganj on the Raebareli-Sultanpur highway, where visibility was severely reduced by thick fog that blanketed the area. The crash disrupted traffic on a key route used by commuters traveling across the region.
The deceased were identified as Deepak Singh, 45, a resident of Anni Baijal in Gauriganj, and Rituraj Yadav, 35, a resident of Kaushambi. Both were travelling in the car and died on the spot. The injured were rushed to the district hospital in Gauriganj, with four reported to be in a critical condition while others sustained serious or minor injuries.
Police said preliminary inquiries point to poor visibility due to dense fog as the primary cause of the collision. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and further investigations are underway. Authorities appealed to motorists to exercise caution, use fog lights, and reduce speeds in such conditions to prevent a repeat of these tragedies.
Road safety officials and local authorities indicated that fog-related accidents are a recurrent risk in the winter months, urging drivers to stay vigilant and follow traffic rules even when roads appear quiet. Community members offered condolences to the families of the deceased and called for improved signage and road-safety measures on this stretch of highway.
