AI Impact Hits Wix: Tech Giant Lays Off 20% of Global Workforce

The tech industry is facing yet another wave of downsizing as website-building giant Wix announced it is laying off approximately 20% of its workforce. The Israel-based company, founded in 2006, cited the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and fluctuating exchange rates as the primary reasons for this significant move.

In a message to employees, Wix CEO Avishai Abrahami explained that the company must adapt to a landscape where AI is fundamentally changing how websites are built and maintained. While AI offers new efficiencies, it also necessitates a leaner organization to remain competitive in a shifting global market.

This news comes at a time of heightened anxiety across the technology sector. Wix is not alone in its struggles; industry giants like Meta have also recently carried out mass layoffs. The trend appears to be part of a much larger shift. A recent survey revealed a startling statistic: 99% of CEOs expect AI to lead to further job cuts within the next two years.

For many, the Wix announcement serves as a wake-up call. It highlights how quickly automation is moving from a theoretical threat to a practical reality in corporate boardrooms. As companies grapple with currency volatility and the need to integrate smarter technology, the human workforce is finding itself in a state of flux.

While the company hopes these cuts will stabilize its financial future, the human cost is undeniable. Hundreds of employees are now searching for their next roles in an increasingly crowded tech job market. Whether this is a temporary correction or the start of a permanent AI-driven downsizing era remains to be seen.
