Nepal Avalanche Tragedy: 15 Lives Lost on Mount Himlung, Search Halted

Search teams in Nepal have recovered eight more bodies at the base camp of Mount Himlung, bringing the total death toll to 15 after a severe avalanche struck the area on Sunday. One person remains missing following the disaster.
The Nepal National Mountain Guide Association, which is spearheading the search efforts, reported that rescuers dug through heavy snow to locate the victims inside tents at the base camp. However, recovery efforts have been temporarily concluded due to ongoing mountain hazards, with further searches dependent on improved conditions.
Experienced mountain guides took advantage of a brief window of good weather earlier in the week to comb through the snow-covered base camp. They successfully located 10 other climbers who were part of the group on Mount Himlung, a towering 7,126-meter (23,380-foot) peak located in north-central Nepal.
Nepal is renowned globally, housing eight of the world's 14 tallest mountains, including Mount Everest.
All those confirmed dead or still missing are Nepali nationals. They were reportedly preparing the base camp for foreign clients expected to arrive for the Autumn climbing season, which commenced this month. This avalanche is being described as one of the worst disasters in Nepal's mountaineering history, a region that draws hundreds of foreign climbers annually, many of whom face perilous conditions.
The tragedy compounds Nepal's ongoing challenges with natural disasters. The nation is still reeling from devastating floods in August that swept away villages, leaving over 1,400 people dead and nearly 6,000 missing. Additionally, a fresh wave of heavy rain and landslides has claimed at least 30 lives over the past week, according to the national disaster management authority.
These recent landslides have wreaked havoc on roads, bridges, and homes, isolating communities and forcing residents into emergency shelters.
The adverse weather conditions are also significantly impacting the Annapurna Circuit, a vital trekking route.
Numerous trekkers have been forced to abandon their journeys, with many airlifted by helicopter from areas like Manang and Mustang due to damaged infrastructure.
Those attempting overland departures recounted arduous journeys across multiple landslide sites, damaged trails, and flooded areas, with some taking days to reach safety while others spent nights stranded in forests.
