IED Found Behind Amritsar Police Post Defused; Investigation Underway
An improvised explosive device was recovered behind a police post in Amritsar and defused by bomb squads; FIR filed and investigators probing the incident.
Punjab Police recovered an improvised explosive device behind the Rayya police post in Amritsar district on Friday night. The area was cordoned off and a bomb disposal squad was rushed to the spot. The IED was later defused, and an FIR was registered at Beas police station. Investigations have been ordered as authorities say the incident is being probed to establish how the explosive material reached inside the city.
An official stated, due to the alertness and swift action of Amritsar rural police, an IED-related incident was averted in time. Security has been stepped up after intelligence inputs flagged a potential terror threat, and police posted updates on X to reassure the public that measures are in place.
The opposition reacted, with BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh slamming the AAP government, describing the attempted attack on a police post as a serious reflection of the deteriorating security situation in Punjab. He questioned how such explosive material could reach the city and whether the intelligence apparatus had weakened or priorities lay elsewhere. He pointed to recurring concerns — gang wars, criminal activity from jails, drone-based smuggling of weapons and narcotics, and cross-border terror modules — as signs of a weakening internal security framework.
Authorities have stressed a thorough investigation to identify lapses and prevent future attempts, and have urged residents to stay vigilant while security agencies review leads and tighten protective measures.
