A grave incident has rocked Jammu and Kashmir, as over 30 Army personnel, including a commanding officer, have been booked for allegedly storming a police station in Kishtwar district, assaulting police personnel, and causing significant damage to government property. The First Information Report (FIR) includes serious charges such as attempted murder and destruction of public property, highlighting the severity of the alleged actions.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, reportedly stemmed from a traffic violation. Officials state that a police party had intercepted and seized a private vehicle belonging to an Army official. In response, around 30 to 40 personnel from the 17 Rashtriya Rifles (RR), stationed at Camp Kijayee, are accused of launching a “pre-planned” attack on the Atholi police station.
According to the complaint filed by Station House Officer (SHO) Inspector Amrit Kotach, the Army personnel, allegedly led by Major Vikash Sharma and Naib Subedar Shankar Gurkhe, and under the direct instructions of Commanding Officer N. Arun Gandhi, scaled the police station’s main gate and boundary wall. They were reportedly armed with lathis, iron rods, and other weapons, indicating a clear intent to inflict harm.
Inspector Kotach stated that he was away for a meeting when he received a call about the “criminal conspiracy” and the violent assault unfolding at his station. Upon rushing back, he claims he was physically assaulted by Major Sharma and that his uniform was torn. The FIR further alleges that the attackers’ “common intention was to cause fatal injuries and kill the police personnel on duty.”
The Army has acknowledged the matter, stating that it is currently under examination through appropriate institutional mechanisms. They have assured that suitable action will be taken based on a joint investigation into the incident. This unusual confrontation between two crucial security forces in the region has raised serious concerns and underscores the need for a thorough and impartial inquiry.
