Littler's Quest for Darts Finals: A Modest Start in Leicester!

Darts superstar Luke Littler has officially begun his pursuit of prize money to qualify for the prestigious Players Championship finals, though his initial outing saw a modest run to the quarter-finals of the 27th event. The 19-year-old, known for strategically managing his packed schedule, typically opts out of these 'floor events.' However, with a dream of a clean sweep of major titles in 2026, securing a spot in the finals is crucial.

The race is on for Littler, as only eight floor events remain before the finals weekend in November. To qualify for Minehead, players need to be among the top 64, with the projected cut-off exceeding £30,000 across all 34 events. On his first appearance, Littler managed to add £4,000 to his tally by reaching the last eight.

His journey in Leicester concluded with a narrow 6-5 defeat to Jermaine Wattimena in a thrilling final-leg decider.

Wattimena sealed his victory with an impressive 115 checkout, a significant blow for Littler, whose strategy is to accumulate sufficient prize money with as few appearances as possible. Wattimena later went on to win the entire event, defeating Kevin Doets 8-6 in the final.

Before facing Wattimena, Littler showcased his strong form, beating Archie Self 6-2, Arno Merk 6-3, and William O’Connor 6-3.

He then delivered a dominant 6-0 performance against Chris Dobey in the last 16, setting up the quarter-final clash where Wattimena proved to be an insurmountable obstacle.

With another event scheduled in Leicester for Wednesday, Littler hopes to significantly boost his winnings during his 48-hour stint in the Midlands. Despite his well-known preference for grander stages over floor events, his focused approach and strong early performances indicate his serious intent. However, regardless of Wednesday's outcome, it appears he might still need to travel to Den Bosch in September to secure his qualification spot.
