Sonam Wangchuk, the renowned education reformist whose life inspired the character of Phunsukh Wangdu in the Bollywood hit "3 Idiots," has entered the 17th day of his hunger strike at Jantar Mantar. His health is reportedly worsening, sparking widespread concern and urgent appeals from prominent public figures across India.
Wangchuk's protest focuses on two critical demands: addressing examination irregularities and calling for the resignation of ministers involved. His steadfast commitment to these issues has drawn attention to systemic problems, prompting a chorus of voices to appeal for his well-being.
Among those urging him to end his fast is actor Omi Vaidya, famously known as "Chatur" from "3 Idiots." Vaidya shared his endorsement of Wangchuk's protest, reminding everyone that the beloved Phunsukh Wangdu character was rooted in Wangchuk's ideals. Activist Prashant Bhushan further amplified Vaidya's message on social media platforms, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Adding to the appeals, Trinamool MP Mahua Moitra has also urged Wangchuk to call off his hunger strike, stating that the government "doesn't care about your life." Similarly, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal expressed his concern, noting that Wangchuk "is an asset of the country" and appealed for him to end his fast, promising to meet him on July 16. These calls reflect a growing anxiety among political leaders and the public regarding Wangchuk's deteriorating health condition.
The concern extends beyond political figures, with eminent personalities like author Arundhati Roy and actor Naseeruddin Shah joining others in appealing for the protest to end, citing health risks to the activists involved.
