Malayalam cinema is mourning the loss of Sreenivasan, a celebrated actor, scriptwriter and filmmaker whose work redefined the industry with his unique blend of humor and social insight. He died in Kochi on Saturday, December 20, 2025, at the age of 69 after battling cardiac and other ailments. His passing marks the end of an era for a storyteller who touched generations with laughter, satire and heartfelt storytelling.
Born on April 6, 1956, at Pattiam near Thalassery in Kannur district, Sreenivasan carved out a five-decade career that saw him act in more than 225 films. He was known as a Renaissance Man of Malayalam cinema—an actor who could make audiences laugh while also prompting them to think, and a writer whose words left an indelible mark on the screen.
Sreenivasan’s influence went beyond acting. He redefined cinema through some of the most beloved screenplays in Malayalam film history, including Sandesham, Azhakiya Ravanan, Varavelpu, Nadodikattu and Thalayanamanthram. His knack for crafting relatable characters and pointed social commentary helped the industry grow a distinct voice that resonated with viewers across generations. In addition to his writing, he directed films like Vadakkunokkiyanthram and Chinthavishtayaya Shyamala, which were both critically acclaimed and popular with audiences.
His contributions did not go unrecognized. He received a National Film Award and six Kerala State Film Awards, among other honors, for his work, which spanned acting, writing, dubbing and producing. Those accolades only underscore the breadth of his talent and the impact he had on Malayalam cinema.
Sreenivasan is survived by his wife, Vimala Sreenivasan, and his sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, both of whom have carried forward his legacy in the industry. He had long been a beloved figure in Kochi, where he spent years contributing to the fabric of Malayalam film culture. His cremation is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Sunday, December 21, 2025, at his residence in Kandanadu near Thripunitura, a moment that will be watched by fans and peers alike who remember his warmth, wit and relentless dedication to cinema.
