Trump-Backed Election Denier Wins Arizona Governor Primary!
Andy Biggs secures GOP nomination for Arizona Governor, setting up a fierce battle with Dem Gov. Katie Hobbs. Will election denial be a key issue? #ArizonaPolitics #Election2024
A high-stakes political showdown is brewing in Arizona after U.S. Representative Andy Biggs, a staunch ally of former President Donald Trump and a prominent figure in efforts to question the 2020 election results, clinched the Republican nomination for governor on Tuesday. Biggs' victory sets the stage for a heated general election battle against incumbent Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs.
Biggs, who easily defeated fellow Republican Rep. David Schweikert, received a significant boost from Trump's endorsement and backing from Turning Point Action. Schweikert had previously cautioned that Biggs' hard-line conservative stance might alienate independent voters crucial for Republican success in the swing state of Arizona. Democrats currently hold both U.S. Senate seats and the state's top three elected offices, underscoring the importance of this gubernatorial race.
Following his win, Biggs wasted no time in urging Republicans to "turn Arizona red again," dismissing criticisms that his views are too extreme. "I am a conservative — and a principled conservative — but I work with people that don't necessarily agree with me on every issue," Biggs stated, aiming to bridge potential divides within the party.
Democrats, however, are gearing up to make Biggs' role in Trump's attempts to block the certification of the 2020 election a central theme of the general election campaign. Governor Katie Hobbs, who narrowly triumphed over Republican Kari Lake in 2022, was quick to launch an attack. She declared, "The more Arizonans learn about Biggs, the more they'll realize he's one big problem they can't afford." This suggests the upcoming election will be a referendum on both policy and past actions related to election integrity.
Adding to the state's political landscape, former Arizona Cardinals kicker Jay Feely, another Trump-backed candidate, also secured the Republican nomination in the competitive 1st Congressional District. On the Democratic side for the same district, emergency physician Amish Shah held a slim lead over party-supported Marlene Galán-Woods, a result that could indicate further challenges for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, which has seen several of its preferred candidates lose primaries this year. These results highlight the ongoing dynamic of primary elections shaping the future political battles in Arizona.
