A devastating explosion rocked the Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) premises on September 30, 2026, leading to one fatality and several injuries. The incident, believed to be caused by a rupture in the Coker Hydrotreater (CHT) Unit, sent shockwaves through the local community, with residents reporting a loud explosion-like sound and dense smoke.
Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy confirmed the tragic death of Manish Karkera (30), a contract worker from Mulky, whose body was found charred. Another individual, Rajesh Baptist, sustained significant 35% burn injuries and is currently receiving treatment in the ICU at Srinivasa Hospital, though doctors state he is out of danger.
Additionally, eight others working in an office adjacent to the affected unit suffered minor injuries and have been treated.
The blast, which occurred around forenoon, resulted in a fire that sent thick smoke billowing from the refinery.
The intensity of the explosion was such that window panes in nearby buildings, including the Jokatte gram panchayat building, shattered, and tremors were felt as far as Mangaluru International Airport. Residents in areas like Angaragundi, Baikampady, and Kulai also experienced the loud sound and vibrations, sparking widespread concern.
Emergency services, including fire tenders from New Mangalore Port Authority and local fire and emergency services, swiftly responded to assist MRPL's firefighting teams. The blaze was subsequently brought under control, and MRPL issued a statement confirming that the fire had been contained, though firefighting operations might continue as part of safe handling procedures.
The company specified that the incident involved a rupture of the Cold Separator operating at high pressure within the CHT Unit.
While MRPL's initial statement mentioned no major injuries and only one minor injury, the Police Commissioner's detailed update provides a clearer picture of the human cost of this industrial accident.
Authorities are continuing to monitor the situation, prioritizing the safety of personnel and the facility.
