The National Stock Exchange of India Ltd. (NSE) has officially joined the ranks of the country's most elite companies, breaking into the top-10 most valued firms by market capitalization. This landmark achievement comes after a robust performance of its shares, which surged over 5% during intraday trading on Thursday (September 24, 2026), following an initial muted debut.
The exchange's shares began trading at ₹1,800 on the BSE, a modest increase of 0.84% from its issue price of ₹1,785. However, momentum quickly built, propelling the shares to ₹1,878, marking a significant 5.21% jump. This impressive climb boosted NSE's market valuation to a staggering ₹4,54,966.88 crore, securing its place among India's financial giants.
NSE now stands as the tenth most valued firm on the BSE, surpassing notable companies like Hindustan Unilever, with a market capitalization of ₹4,54,845.62 crore, and Sun Pharma, valued at ₹4,46,985.57 crore.
For context, its peer, BSE, holds a market valuation of ₹1,31,946.42 crore.
The top of the list continues to be dominated by Reliance Industries (₹16,67,750.07 crore), followed by Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, SBI, TCS, Bajaj Finance, Larsen & Toubro, and LIC, in descending order of market valuation.
This successful listing follows the ₹22,569-crore initial public offering (IPO) of NSE, which proved to be a massive success. The IPO, India's second-largest to date, received an overwhelming response, being subscribed nearly 6 times on its final day of bidding on Monday (September 21), driven by strong demand from institutional buyers.
It stands as the country's second-largest public issue, just after Hyundai Motor India's ₹27,870-crore IPO in 2024, and notably surpassed LIC's ₹21,000 crore offering from 2022.
The journey to this public listing has been a long one for NSE. The public issue marks a crucial milestone for the exchange, whose plans for listing had been stalled for almost a decade due to various regulatory hurdles, including issues stemming from the co-location controversy.
The mega IPO generated an impressive demand of nearly ₹90,300 crore against its ₹22,568 crore issue size.
The offering included an Offer for Sale (OFS) of up to 12.64 crore equity shares by existing shareholders, with a fixed price band of ₹1,700-1,785 per equity share.
Established in 1992 and officially recognized as a stock exchange by SEBI in April 1993, NSE commenced its operations in 1994, initially with the launch of the wholesale debt market, swiftly followed by the introduction of its cash market segment. This recent triumph underscores NSE's pivotal role in the Indian financial landscape and its continued growth trajectory.
