West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke at a public rally in Murshidabad, saying that President’s rule would have been imposed in the state if the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) had not been pursued. “If we had not allowed the SIR, they would have imposed President’s rule without voting. Do you understand Amit Shah’s trick? We are not that stupid, Babumoshai, Godibhai! We will do it, we will fight. We will win and show it,” she declared.
Her remarks come as the SIR revision has drawn renewed attention in the state, with officials noting a dramatic drop in polling stations with zero ineligible voters as the exercise continues, even as hundreds of thousands of voter forms reportedly remain uncollected. Banerjee urged supporters not to fear the process and to submit their documents, stressing that the state would not allow the NRC or detention camps. “Luckily I was born in Birbhum! Otherwise they would have called me a Bangladeshi too. Listen, I will not allow NRC to be done in Bengal. Even if they cut my throat, I will not allow any detention camp to be built here, I will not expel anyone,” she said.
Ahead of December 6, Banerjee promoted a message of communal harmony, emphasising that “Majorities will protect minorities” and that Bengal respects all religions, while warning against the influence of communal forces. Her remarks come as a separate political development unfolded in Murshidabad, where the Trinamool Congress suspended MLA Humayun Kabir for proposing to lay the foundation stone of a Babri Masjid replica on December 6. Kabir had also threatened to block highways if his plans were blocked, intensifying tensions in the region.
The party’s action against Kabir underscored ongoing internal discipline as Bengal braces for a contentious week ahead, with further details expected regarding his future political moves, including his stated plan to launch a new party later this month. While the party has not officially commented on every specific claim linked to Kabir, the suspension confirms a firm stance against provocative proposals that could inflame communal tensions in Murshidabad and beyond.
