Calcutta HC Extends MP Mahua Moitra's Security Amidst Egg Attacks
Calcutta High Court extends security for TMC MP Mahua Moitra in Krishnanagar until Nov 30 due to alleged egg-pelting and mob attacks during constituency visits. A must-read on political protection!
In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court has once again stepped in to ensure the safety of Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra. On Thursday, October 1, 2026, the court extended its order to provide her with two security personnel until November 30. This protection is specifically for her visits to the Krishnanagar constituency, where she has reportedly faced incidents of egg-pelting and mob harassment.
The single Bench of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya issued the extension, building upon a previous directive from September 1. That earlier order had instructed the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Krishnanagar to deploy two police personnel to prevent any further instances of egg-pelting or other forms of harassment targeting the MP.
Ms. Moitra's counsel, Arka Nag, informed the court that despite the initial September 1 order, incidents of egg-pelting and mob attacks continued to occur during her constituency visits. This ongoing pattern of harassment prompted the High Court to grant the extended protection. Ms.
Moitra herself reportedly likened facing these attacks to "freedom fighters faced bullets," highlighting the severity of the situations.
Furthermore, Justice Bhattacharyya directed that Ms. Moitra's petition be brought before a division Bench. This Bench, presided over by Chief Justice Ravindra V.
Ghuge, is already handling a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) concerning egg-pelting incidents across West Bengal. Additional Advocate General Rajdeep Majumdar confirmed that the division Bench had previously, on September 23, ordered the High Court Registry to identify and list all petitions related to egg-pelting on individuals or public figures for a hearing on November 27.
The extended security measure underscores the court's concern for the safety of public figures amidst political activities.
