UK Forces Within 200m of Iranian Strike Near Bahrain Base

British forces deployed in the Middle East say they were within 200 metres of an Iranian missile and drone strike on the US naval base in Bahrain, as Tehran's retaliation widened amid high regional tensions. Around 300 British personnel were positioned close to the attack, underscoring how the conflict has drawn UK forces into frontline defensive duties. No casualties were reported, and troops remain on the highest alert as the situation develops.

Defence Secretary John Healey has warned that Iran’s strikes have been indiscriminate, targeting civilian sites and military assets across the region. Britain stresses that it is not participating in the US-Israel campaign against Iran but is actively protecting allies and critical infrastructure in the area.

British jets from RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus and the American Al Udeid airbase in Qatar have been mobilised to shoot down drones and slower-moving missiles, while acknowledging the limits against faster ballistic threats. In separate incidents, an Iranian drone was shot down by a Typhoon jet in Iraq, and a missile landed near UK personnel involved in counter-IS operations in Iraq, illustrating the breadth of Tehran’s retaliation.

The broader regional confrontation has seen Iran strike targets across Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Jordan since the US-Israel campaign began, drawing international concern and questions about escalation and legality. The UK says it is coordinating with allies to safeguard civilian sites and military assets while monitoring the situation at the highest level of readiness.

As the conflict evolves, Britain prioritises protecting personnel and critical infrastructure while seeking diplomatic channels to de-escalate tensions and avoid further harm to civilians.
