Anna Sui Spring 2027: A Whirlwind of Art, Nymphs & '70s Softness!

Anna Sui's Spring 2027 ready-to-wear collection is a testament to her celebrated research-driven design process, this time sparked by an unexpected discovery. While flipping through a past issue of Vogue, Sui stumbled upon the work of artist Howard Gardiner Cushing, an artist previously unknown to her.

This serendipitous find sent her down a creative rabbit hole, a process she absolutely loves.

Sui described these moments of discovery as opening up a "new universe." Cushing's ethereal paintings of water nymphs adorned with jewels and their dolphin companions captivated her. The delicate prettiness of these works brought to mind classic storybook illustrations, leading Sui to develop enchanting purple and black fairytale prints.

Her exploration didn't stop there; she delved into drawings inlaid with nacre, connecting them to pearl-inlaid furniture by Louis Süe, which then inspired stunning camisoles and miniskirts embellished with gradient pearly paillettes.

The collection further unfolded with parasols inspired by the pochoirs of Deco artist George Barbier and a chic "Poiret stripe" pajama set. Sui's genius lies not in mere replication, but in a unique form of "vibesmaxxing," blending diverse inspirations into something distinctly her own.

Though her primary sources for this season hailed from the 1910s and '20s, the collection exuded a soft, flowing '70s style, creating a beautiful anachronism on the runway.

"Layering is the important thing in the season," Sui noted, and this was evident in standout pieces like look 24: an Empire slip with high side slits worn over a printed mesh top and rhinestone-studded jeans, hinting at a touch of grunge. Smiling models graced the runway in softly colored, flowy garments, with lingerie dressing taking center stage.

Camis and slips appeared in various charming fabrics, often adorned with delicate ribbons and rosettes.

Kimono cuts and pajama sets further enhanced the collection's dreamy, languid, and interior-focused aesthetic.

While layering was key, some of the less layered looks made the most significant impact, allowing individual pieces to truly shine. These included cabochon-embellished jeans paired with embroidered tops, crisp white eyelet ensembles (one featuring a bedazzled logo tee), and the closing plisée looks that echoed the colors of Cushing's sea sprite paintings. A notable '90s remake, a black dress with stars at the bust, also caught the eye.
